Bio
Tara has had a thriving studio of talented students for almost ten years, teaching students of all ages ranging from different levels and backgrounds. Her private flute students have successfully auditioned for various honors ensembles, soloist competitions, festivals, and workshops at the local, regional, and national level. Several of her students hold top chairs and honors in their school program and many have received scholarships to pursue music at the college level as music majors and non- music majors.
Tara began teaching at the age of 16 and came to the realization that teaching was her passion. She achieves enjoyment by making music relevant and exciting to her students and exposing them to all the opportunities that this amazing art has to offer. Tara believes in a holistic approach to teaching, involving music appreciation, theory, improvisation and ear training. Tara does not teach only flute, she teaches her students to be artists and passionate human beings.
Tara Burnett received two Master of Music degrees in Flute Performance and Music Theory from the University of Oklahoma, graduating with a 4.0 in both degrees. Her Bachelor of Music degree is from Oklahoma State University in Flute Performance. Her teachers include Valerie Watts, Conor Nelson, Karla Ordonez, and Donna Shin.
Tara is an active clinician in pedagogy and adjudicator for many local and regional competitions. She holds clinics and masterclasses for area schools and music events, and currently serves on the board for Oklahoma Flute Society. Tara is also engaged in National Flute Association, Oklahoma Theory Roundtable, Society for Music Theory, Music Teachers National Association, and College Music Society. In addition to her own studio, Tara is a Professor of Music at Oklahoma City Community College.
Tara keeps a busy solo performance schedule, including a solo recital every year, performances with Dr. Anna Ho, area orchestras, and other various chamber ensembles. But her heart belongs in teaching.
