Tara has had a thriving studio of talented students for over sixteen years, teaching students of all ages ranging from different levels and backgrounds. Her private flute students have successfully auditioned for various honors ensembles, soloist competitions, festivals, and workshops at the local, regional, national and international levels. Her students hold the top chairs and honors in their school’s program and many have received scholarships to pursue and/or continue music at the college level as music majors and non-music majors.
Tara began teaching at the age of 16 and came to the realization that teaching was her passion. She achieves enjoyment by making music relevant and exciting to her students through exposing them to all the opportunities that this amazing art has to offer! Tara believes in a holistic approach to teaching, involving music appreciation, theory, improvisation and ear training. Tara does not teach only flute, but instead, works toward instilling a sense of passion and artistry.
Tara is an active clinician in pedagogy and adjudicator for many local and regional competitions. She holds clinics and masterclasses for area universities, schools, and music events, including lecturing at University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma State University on how to run a successful Private Music Studio. Tara currently serves on the board for Oklahoma Flute Society as Corporate and Collegiate Sponsor Chair and Exhibitor Chair and during the summer, she is a full-time faculty member for Floot Fire-Oklahoma City. Other organizations that Tara is a part of include: Oklahoma Theory Roundtable, Society for Music Theory, Music Teachers National Association, and College Music Society.
Outside of her studio teaching, Tara is the Development Coordinator for the Oklahoma City Philharmonic Orchestra, which includes fundraising & advocating for the arts throughout Oklahoma. She also keeps a busy performance schedule–solo recitals, collaborating with Dr. Anna Ho-Neumann; playing flute/piccolo in the Norman Philharmonic Orchestra and other area orchestras; and various chamber ensembles. Even with all of her accomplishments in performing & advocating the arts, Tara’s heart truly belongs in her private flute studio and fostering our future flutists of tomorrow!
